Hydro jetting cleans drain and sewer pipes with high-pressure water from a self-propelling nozzle. It is best for grease, sediment and fine roots, safe on sound pipe of common materials, risky on broken or fragile pipe without a camera check, and typically costs more per visit than snaking. The answers below cover the questions people ask most often.
- Jetting cleans the full pipe wall; snaking opens a path.
- Camera first on older, fragile or unknown pipe.
- Flow (gpm) carries debris; pressure (psi) breaks it loose.
- Any jetter can cause injection injuries; treat skin penetration as an emergency.
- All costs on this site are planning estimates, not quotes.
01 /How this FAQ is organized
The questions below move from how jetting works, to whether it suits your pipe, to safety, to cost and hiring. Each answer is written to stand on its own. For depth, follow the links to the full guides: what is hydro jetting, pressure vs flow, jetting nozzles explained, is hydro jetting safe for old pipes, hydro jetting vs snaking and hydro jetting cost.
If you want a recommendation for your own line, the jet-or-auger decision tool takes your blockage type, pipe material, camera findings, pipe size and access and explains its reasoning. To check a specific machine, the Jetter Power Calculator turns its psi and gpm into hydraulic horsepower and a rig class. Terms used here are defined in the glossary.
Several questions have their own in-depth guides:
- Already poured a chemical down the drain? See drain cleaner vs hydro jetting, and for toilets, septic systems, RVs and disposals, which drain cleaner is safe.

02 /What should you ask a jetting contractor?
Five questions cover most of what separates a careful jetting job from a rushed one. Ask them when booking or when the operator arrives.
- Will you camera the line before or after jetting, and will I get the video?
- What pipe material do you expect, and does it change the pressure or nozzle you use?
- Which nozzle will you start with, and why?
- Where will you access the line, and what happens if there is no usable cleanout?
- What is included in the price, and what would add to it?
FAQAll questions
What is hydro jetting?
It is a drain-cleaning method that pumps high-pressure water through a hose to a nozzle with mostly rear-facing jets. The jets pull the nozzle up the pipe, scrub the wall and flush debris to the main.
How is hydro jetting different from snaking?
Snaking uses a spinning cable to bore through a clog. Jetting uses water to clean the full pipe circumference and carry the debris away. Snaking suits solid objects; jetting suits grease, sediment and fine roots.
Is hydro jetting safe for my pipes?
On sound pipe of common materials, including clay, cast iron and plastic, yes when pressure and nozzle suit the pipe. On cracked, thin, soft or collapsed pipe, it can cause damage, so camera-inspect older lines first.
Can hydro jetting damage cast iron?
Sound cast iron tolerates jetting. Thin, corroded bottoms and aggressive descaling tools are the risk. A camera shows wall condition before cleaning.
Should Orangeburg pipe be jetted?
Only with great caution, if at all. Bituminous fibre pipe softens and deforms with age; it is often a candidate for replacement rather than cleaning.
What psi is used for sewer jetting?
Residential trailer and cart jetters are often quoted around 3,000 to 4,000 psi. That is a typical range, not a rule, and flow matters as much as pressure.
Why does flow matter more than pressure?
Flow carries loosened debris out of the pipe and gives the nozzle pulling power. High pressure with low flow breaks material loose but leaves it behind.
Which nozzle is used for grease?
Usually a rotating nozzle, sometimes a heavy self-rotating head, with hot water helpful for hardened grease. A penetrator may open a stopped line first.
Does hydro jetting remove tree roots?
It cuts and flushes roots inside the pipe, but roots regrow because the tree and the open joint remain. Lining or repairing the joint stops regrowth at that point.
Can a frozen sewer line be jetted?
Yes. Hot-water jetting melts ice and flushes the meltwater away. Cold-water jetting is slower and can refreeze.
Is hydro jetting messy?
Not usually with a proper cleanout. Mess risk rises when the line is backed up or access is through a fixture.
How long does hydro jetting take?
A typical residential main line is often done in one to three hours, including setup and camera. Heavy roots, grease or poor access take longer.
How often should a sewer line be jetted?
Most homes do not need scheduled jetting. Lines with recurring grease or root problems may benefit from an interval set by camera findings.
Can I hydro jet my own sewer line?
For a building sewer, generally not advisable. Consumer kits lack flow, and any jetter can cause injection injuries. Small branch lines are a different case, with care.
What is a water injection injury?
It happens when a high-pressure jet pierces skin and forces contaminated water into tissue. It can look minor but is a surgical emergency; go to an emergency department immediately.
How much does hydro jetting cost in Canada?
A 2026 planning estimate for a residential main line with an accessible cleanout is often about $400 to $900 CAD, higher for roots, grease, poor access or after-hours work.
Is a camera inspection necessary with jetting?
Strongly recommended, especially in older homes or with recurring clogs. It confirms the result and records defects for future decisions.
Does jetting fix a sagging sewer pipe?
No. It clears what the sag collects, but the belly keeps holding water and debris. A repair is the fix.
Is jetting needed before pipe lining?
Yes. Liners need a clean wall, so roots, grease, sediment and scale are removed and the pipe verified by camera first.
Can jetting be done through a backwater valve?
Usually not through the flap. Operators work downstream of it or remove the flap temporarily, then reinstall and check it.
Who pays if the blockage is on the city side?
It depends on the municipality's rules for the service line. Confirm with your municipality; in Calgary, call 311.
Can I use drain cleaner before calling for jetting?
It is better not to. Chemical drain cleaners rarely clear main lines, and corrosive water left in a blocked line can splash the person who opens it. If you have used one, tell the contractor the product and amount before any cleanout is opened.
Can weeping tile be hydro jetted?
Often, yes. Intact foundation drains are flushed from the sump pit or a cleanout at low pressure with a flushing nozzle. Crushed, missing or disconnected tile needs repair instead.
Is hydro jetting worth it?
It is when the cause is build-up such as grease, sediment or fine roots, because it removes the material rather than punching a hole through it. It is not worth it for a lodged object or a broken pipe.
Is HAUSE Sewer a jetting contractor?
No. SewerJetting.ca is part of HAUSE Sewer, an independent information and quote-request network. It does not perform work; it helps you understand options and request quotes.
